What is a Root Canal?

During a root canal, your dentist removes diseased tissues, nerves and blood vessels from inside a damaged tooth. Without a root canal treatment, damaged teeth will die and an extraction will be needed.

To start, your dentist will remove the diseased tissue from the tooth. The inner chamber will then be cleaned and disinfected before being filled with a medicated material to prevent infection. To end the procedure, the tooth will typically be capped with a dental restoration such as a dental crown.

Benefits of a Root Canal

To help relieve your symptoms, save your natural tooth, and limit the need for more extensive dental work in the future, your dentist can perform a root canal procedure.

By removing bacteria and decay from the interior of your tooth, your dentist can help to stop the spread of infection and restores the healthy part of your tooth.

Most patients who have root canals experience little pain or discomfort. Given proper care, most teeth that have had a root canal treatment can last a lifetime.
